If you haven't already done so, I urge you to check out the Figurepunk website. Sol Nte is definitely 'doing his own thing.' He has created some very cool toys over the past few years. A Figurepunk toy made its way into the recently published book 'Dot Dot Dash.' When I started down the road with the creation of my own toy, the Figurepunk DIY section definitely provided me with some interesting ideas. Here's a bit of what Figurepunk is all about - Founded in 2004, Figurepunk is based in Stoke-on-Trent in the UK. It is an experiment in independent designing, sculpting and manufacturing avant-garde art toys. Figurepunk creates toys as limited edition art objects in deliberately small editions. There is no aim, no plan, some of the figures aren't even for sale ... it's a DIY thing, a creative freedom thing, a punk thing. As time goes on and we see ever greater monopoly of toy production by large companies, so it becomes more important for individual cultural workers to offer an alternative to shallow mass market products. Inspired by Asian independent toy artists Figurepunk makes toys with originality, individuality and character. We encourage others to do the same! www.figurepunk.com.
